How I Lowered My Cholesterol Naturally

Hi – I’m Steve Running. I’m a 47 year old dad. I live in Burbank, CA (love it!) along with my wife, son, daughter, and 2 Shih Tzu puppies…a happy, healthy family.

But – for me – the healthy part wasn’t always this way. As I entered my 40’s, it was on the decline.

Here’s me in 2011 when my son was calling me “Chubby Steven” – nom-nom-nom!!

I was gaining weight, having trouble sleeping, and getting sick more frequently. My lifestyle was an all-you-can-eat buffet of food, drinks and video games.

My weight had worked its way up to 178. Being 5′ 9″ this put me in the “overweight” category on BMI calculators like this. And it showed in photos.

So I had a physical. The doctor said a couple things that stuck with me.

First he looked at the results of my EKG – he told me that my heart was “under exercised.”

Then, after the blood work, “If you can’t lower your cholesterol, you’ll need to go on Lipitor.”

My dad was on medication for high blood pressure and high cholesterol, so I was starting to think I was genetically destined for the same fate.

But I wanted to do everything I could to avoid [permanent] medication.

The doctor set me up with a nutritionist, who laid out a diet plan for me.

I gave the diet a shot, but after a couple months it fell apart. Things were not looking good.

Around this same time, a gym opened up across the street from my office.

So I got myself a membership, hired a trainer, and committed myself to going regularly.

This wasn’t the first time I’d joined a gym. But I was never motivated like this.

Because if I didn’t make some changes in my life, there would be a real consequence.

The thought of being dependent on medication when I had a choice not to be kept me focused.

After a few weeks of hitting the gym and working with a trainer, my weight was down, my clothes fit again, I slept better.

And eventually my cholesterol worked its way down to healthy levels.

Without extreme diet changes or pills.

It was simply a new approach to fitness that got me there.

It’s been about 7 years since that doctor’s visit. And I still make fitness a daily part of my lifestyle.
